Nice Kev, saw the other pics from the email link. its looking really good.
are you going to do anything special? bullet holes battle damage?
The current textures I've painted up have grime, chips and scratches on them. Of course, it gets tricky to paint this up when the maps are all separate planars - I keep getting various "cross overs" between surfaces slightly out and you can occasionally catch a subtle inconsistancy in things... (Mainly spec and diff maps that have just a slight 1-8 value difference in the base gray)
I'll try and UV out everything if I can as a nice clean map and repaint - Otherwise I'll rebuild the textures out as a single "huge" image and just crop out the separate planars at the end so the layers for all the maps are the same. Hmmm, yeh, that would have been smarter I think... Oh for smart thinking earlier on!
Given its a hard-body, its relatively easy to manually unwrap in modeler...
As for tools in relation to CORE - Hard to tell at the moment - CORE definitely has the architecture to make great UV texturing tools a reality. 3D Coat is nice in that it unwraps and allows you to manually unwrap as well, however there are plenty of UV Unwrapping tools around, standalone, plugins and other app's (like Blender, etc) that can unwrap and export models.
3D Coat is nice in that its a full sculpt-n-paint tool if you need it. That said, you could also consider BodyPaint as well if you want a paid solution...
