With all the speed, power and ease of use that Lightwave has to offer, Im hoping CORE gains a larger market share in being studios primary package. I'd love to see more blockbuster LW CG, of course it would make those with skill in LW more marketable.
Technically there sounds like there is a lot of functionality on offer, the modifier stack looks cool and I'm looking forward to the unified dynamics environment.
When they say water simulation, does that mean fluid dynamics or the displacement technique? Fluids would just make my day!
The idea behind CORE is that the architecture is now completely open - That is, you have access to every little piece of data, from vertices to surface shaders. That makes developing fluids, and advanced systems a lot easier for 3rd party developers and NewTek's own dev's.
It should be pretty exciting to see what gets built into CORE when its released...
Latest news - An open letter from NewTek listing the new features that are coming in CORE. Here's the link - Its in the December 2009 newsletter...

Looks very cool...
Figured it was time to post an update...
CORE is really starting to look very sweet. Its got animation tools in it, the node editors have some nifty new features, and the whole product is very quickly starting to now feel more like a usable application. The last update they produced was packed to the eyeballs with updates...
I'll bring the VPR video along to the March LWUG this week for those interested. Its available on their latest newsletter...
