lol! I love playing with VFX stuff, so I figured as a quicky muck-about project I'd slap this one together. I'll probably talk about this at the next LWUG...
Did a little comp work in DFX - Looks nicer with a little colour adjustment here and there. Mostly I dropped back the saturation and tweaked the gamma's for the individual R G & B channels...
Looks great! I prefer the redder sky, seems more realistic and less washed out, the trees look more realistic in the second though.
Would love to see the animation.
DFX? Is it a stand alone comping package? I think I remember you mention it once. I need something cheaper than AE.
DFX (Digital Fusion - click here for the site) is probably too expensive in that case (I think its MORE then After Effects
).
Yeh, I prefer the redder sky - Maybe I just run the colour correction over the other elements and leave the sky untouched. I might try that tonight and see how it looks. I think the foreground looks more natural because its not as black. There's a little washed-out feel to it that feels more natural.
I might also darken back the missile smoke. I made it whiter since they actually had a missile launch on TV the other night and the wife told me off for making the smoke black (when the real thing was white). Thank goodness I have an honest critique-expert in the house...
I'll see if I can attach the animation here in the forum (I'm sure I have loads of bandwidth on this hosting service (I don't think its limited, but I probably don't want to push it just to find out!
)
I'll go and crunch it down then add it to the next reply (if it will let me).
Here ya go - Its an M4V file (plays fine in Quicktime, but not so good in VLC which seems to have issues decoding the file).

Lemme know what you think...
Looking good, you have that video camera style down pact.
I feel it needs a little haze or pink light fill on the rocket to tie it all together. But that could be just my personal preference seeing as I have been playing with atmospheres in vue a lot.
Either way good show ol' chap.
Nice Kev, yeah the redder one for sure. The QT clip is not the red one is it? In your pic of the two its looks like the lighting on the rocket is different. Looking at the video clip you uploaded the rocket seen to stand out more than it should, but in your pic of the redder one it looks better. So what i’m trying to say
, is I think the rocket looks too sharp, to clean for the video footage (photo) you have it in. It’s more noticeable at the end of the video when you zoon in.
So pretty much what ArmouredBear said. Rocket just stands out a bit.
Yup - In the latest comp I've added a subtle blur (real subtle) to soften the missile a bit. I'll drop the contrast a little to wash it out slightly once I get back into it. This should make it fit in better - Afterall, making the foreground brighter and less contrasty helped make it it in a lot better...
Once I'm done, I'll post an update.
I have a VFX mockumentary project on at the moment (joining in on the students who are starting their own end-of-course projects) so I'll be toying in the VFX arena a little more over the coming month or two... Its all great fun!
